History buffs will enjoy a visit to this incredible, history-rich site. Seeing Rome’s iconic gladiatorial arena in person is incredible. The 50,000-seat Colosseum – also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, inaugurated in AD 80 – was initially clad in travertine and protected by a huge canvas awning. Inside the arena, tiered seating sits over an underground complex where animals were caged. Games here involved gladiators fighting wild animals or each other.
