Chetham's Library

Get a glimpse of history at Chetham’s Library, which was founded in 1653. This oldest surviving public library in Britain was commissioned by Humphrey Chetham, a prosperous Manchester textile merchant, banker and landowner. The building that houses Chetham’s was built in 1421 and is regarded as one of the best medieval complexes in England.
