Old City (Icheri Sheher)

This historical spot sits in the centre of Baku. Declared a historical and cultural reserve in 1977, its beautiful buildings are built out of locally cut limestone polished until smooth and shiny, with its winding streets making it a charming place through which to wander. Three sides are surrounded by a thick fortress wall, with one side open to the Caspian Sea.

Fun fact

Originally, two fortress walls protected Baku, plus a wall between the sea and the city. All have since seen damage.
