Pompey's Pillar
The tall 30-metre-high column towers over the debris of the ancient settlement of Rhakotis, the original locality from which Alexandria grew. Crafted from Aswan granite and thought to have been built in AD291, the column rises from the ruins of Serapeum, an ancient Greek temple.
Fun fact
The column was named by travellers who remembered the murder of the Roman general Pompey by Cleopatra’s brother.
