Fort Qaitbey

Built on the remains of the ancient Pharos lighthouse in 1480, this fort – now beautifully restored – sits on Alexandria’s Eastern Harbour, boasting several rooms worthy of exploration. If you feel like a stroll, you can walk to the fort from Midan Ramla, where the city’s main tram station is. The journey will take about 30 to 45 minutes along the corniche, with wonderful sea views along the way.

Fun fact

The fort’s pillars of red granite are believed to have come from the ancient Pharos lighthouse after its fall in 1303.
